Sky Mobile on Windows Mobile! Print E-mail
By Gears
Back in the mists of time I bought a Sky+ box. Many people will have one of these, possibly the HD version (Sky HD). It lets you watch hundreds of channels via satellite and it'll pause, rewind, fast-forward and time-shift TV to suit you. The system also lets you record TV shows onto the internal hard drive. You can set a series link and record shows in one-click with an easy on-screen planner. It's so simple that many cable and digital TV competitors are still struggling to compete.

The added bonus to this system is that you can use "Remote Record" to talk to your box and set it to record a programme no matter where you are. Just find a computer, log into the Sky TV page with your credentials and you can see your TV planner - set shows to record via the browser and, when you get home, they'll be safely stored on your Sky box. Brilliant stuff. The interface is quite hefty though, and even today's faster Windows Mobile internet browsers aren't quite able to cope with the Flash-based programmes listings and login system. Sky released several Java applications for mobile phones - these let you talk to your Sky box on several phones, but unfortunately there wasn't a Windows Mobile client. We tried the Java versions that were available, but none seemed to work. However, forum member "Rum-Diamond" has pointed us to the correct bits and now it should work - we've tested it on the HTC Kaiser (TyTN II. Try it out on yours and let us know whether it worked..

Ok, first step - make sure you've got an account with Sky, make sure it's linked to your Sky box. Go to My Sky or Sky.com to register yourself and get a username and password.

Next step, turn "Sky by Mobile" on. To do this, go to "My Sky" and click "Manage Profile". You'll see this screen when you click "Sky Mobile"...

Put your number in just to keep their systems happy. They'll send you a text which will get you to browse to a page which supposedly has the appropriate mobile client, however there isn't one specifically for Windows Mobile so it'll moan at this point. It doesn't really matter as long as you're subscribed.

OK, now you need to install this Java software. It might be older or different to your existing Java client, but we know that this one works, so we're recommending this one. You'll need to download to your PC and then copy across to your Windows Mobile. Run it on your Windows Mobile using File Manager. It's called "TNT JBED 24052007.cab".

Next, download SkyMobile_SonyWithoutTv.jar. It's available direct from Sky themselves or you can download it here. Copy the "jar" file to your phone - put it in "My Documents" and then go into "Esmertec Java" that you've just installed on your phone. Click "Menu" and then "Install" and choose "Local Files". You should see one called "SkyMobile_SonyWithoutTv". Click on it, click Go and it'll install.

It may now go straight into the app. If not click the appropriate button...

The app may ask some security questions. They're all easy enough like, "Do you want this app to have network access" etc etc. Just confirm all this and click "OK"...

On the HTC TyTN II we tested the controls were a bit tricky from here on in. The first screen is the login username / password into Sky. To select the first "Username" field I used the navigation controls - touching the screen didn't work, so I pressed the "action" button and then used the slide-out keyboard, although there was a period where the screen blanked out when I did this. Don't worry if another screen appears - it seems to display a whole new screen just to enter your username in. I also had to use the soft-keys under the screen to select the two bottom options (Login and Exit) as pressing the screen again didn't work.

..put your password in using the same method (navigation controls and action button) and then press "Login". If it fails READ the message carefully. It may say that your account isn't registered for Sky Mobile. If so, go back to the Sky page and check your account is setup for Sky Mobile access.

Hopefully you should now be able to select "4" (again with your navigation controls) and go into the TV listing and choose a shot to record, or just see what's on TV tonight! :)

The Android App Review Show - Episode 12
This week I have been asked to review Twitter Pro. I am very fond of Tweetcaster so any new Twitter client has to be good. For £1.50 can this compete?
