According to The Register 100 people are trialling WiMax for BT in both Belfast and Birmingham. BT, using Navini Networks wireless kit are testing how well the kit works and the experience of wireless broadband.
In theory there’s a 31 mile (50km) range on WiMax, and there’s a belief that future mobile phones may be enabled to work on WiMax, which would increase the high-speed availability of broadband across Europe. The potential for interoperability of WiMax with cellular networks is very interesting. WiMax antennas can “share” a cell tower without stopping or impacting existing performance. Networks then could have an opportunity to diversify, however with money being ploughed into 3G it may be a few years before yet another network is provided.
