Anyone remember late 2004 / early 2005? What were you doing? We were reviewing the SPV M2000. Also known as the “HTC Blue Angel” it was pretty innovative for the time and featured a slide-down QWERTY keyboard and Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Five years ago this was cutting edge, as was the OS.
Fast-forward to the present day and the mobile world has changed substantially. Windows Mobile has changed too and there’s been a number of updates since 2003 Second Edition. However, the most recent version – Windows Mobile 6.5 – has received a beating in the press and we didn’t feel that the changes went far enough. So, what would happen if we took a Windows Mobile OS from 2005 and put it next to one from 2009 / 2010? Strip back the friendly manufacturer-supplied interfaces (like TouchFLO 3D or the LG S-Class UI) and the reasons for the bad reviews soon become clear.
We’ve had a few emails and messages in the forum about Windows Mobile this past week. Micosoft have taken a significant hammering following the Marketplace issues, unkind 6.5 reviews and the Danger data loss. There’s still light at the end of the tunnel though, with the HTC HD2, a range of new WinMo handsets and Windows Mobile 7. We want your opinions in our poll. It’s a simple question and right now we’re not even going to think about Windows Mobile 7. Following the release of WinMo 6.5, are you planning to buy WinMo or jump ship?
