Shipped ROMs recently had a cease and desist letter from HTC. It looked like HTC wanted the whole site offline, but now there’s a twist, with HTC telling site owners that only test and carrier files must be removed. This is because certain carrier / network ROMs contain special programs built by the network (T-Mobile / Orange etc) and these shouldn’t really be redistributed.
This reminds us when Google started to get fussy about Android OS modding. After a short while it became apparent that they didn’t actually mind, but messing with and redistributing non-open-source bits was off the cards.
