Earlier today we heard that Nokia Lumia 710 and 800 do not support tethering. Tethering, for those that don’t know, if the ability to share your mobile data connection as a web connection for your laptop.
We couldn’t quite believe it, so we asked the PR team whether this was true or not. They said..
Microsoft takes very seriously meeting (and exceeding) the requirements outlined by agencies such as the FCC in the USA. They felt it was really important to fully address the concerns raised by recent FCC regulations before enabling the tethering feature and are optimistic they can deliver on these requirements though a software update and are working diligently on that now.
We were a little puzzled by this because the Nokia handsets aren’t due to launch in the USA for quite some time yet and we’re in Europe. The very same Europe where the Nokia Lumia 800 will go on sale in a couple of weeks. So we asked them, “That’s all well and good, but we’re in Europe, can you let us know whether tethering will be disabled here in Europe?”
Their response?

So… we’ve asked them the same question again, just to see if we can break the auto-responder. Unfortunately it does indeed seem that tethering won’t be a part of the Lumia handsets when they launch. Doah.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, that’s Dan at Nokia in Austria enjoying a rather nice pink Lumia 800. 🙂
UPDATE: Â It looks like Tethering IS coming to the Lumia range, just not straight away. Â There should be a small software update which will enable Internet Sharing which allows tethering and some other features but we do not have a confirmed date for this update… but its coming!!. Â Now get back in line to get your Lunia 800!! with everyone else – Dan
