OK, story so far. Everything Everywhere are running a 4G trial in Cornwall. Everything seems to be going well, with those on the trial enjoying around 11Mbps. Whilst this isn’t the fastest possible speed, it’s a lot better than the cabled broadband connection through ADSL.
There’s some concern that the 4G rollout will take too long and won’t cover all areas, but today Everything Everywhere have announced a £1.5 billion investment into their “Network Evolution Programme”. This will see more integration between T-Mobile and Orange, an upgrade of existing hardware and prepare the new 4G rollout.
Everything Everywhere is planning double digit growth in its 2012 network investment compared to 2011. The announcement underlines the company’s commitment to building a world class data network and industry leading coverage footprint for consumers and businesses across the UK.
Early next year they will be switching all Orange and T-Mobile devices to automatically select the stronger signal from either network when they have a weak one. We assumed that this was now complete but the details below state that..
The company is in the final stages of “the big switch on” – enabling Orange and T-Mobile customers to use 2G and 3G signals from either of the networks and benefit from fast data speeds in more places. Orange and T-Mobile customers will within weeks have access to the biggest 3G network and widest 3G coverage in the UK.
..so, if you’re not roaming across to the other network on 3G, you should be pretty soon. It looks like Everything Everywhere, like Three, are becoming aware of how important mobile data is to customers. GPRS just doesn’t cut it. Olaf Swantee, CEO of Everything Everywhere, stated..
With mobile data increasing 250% over the past two years, we are making these investments so we can deliver on our ambition to provide the UK’s most reliable, biggest and best mobile data network. We believe that the UK requires a 21st century infrastructure and are committed to rolling out 4G as soon as possible to support growing data use, connect parts of the country with little or no mobile broadband, and drive economic growth.

Everything Everywhere Investing £1.5bn+ in Network Evolution Programme
Integration of T-Mobile and Orange mobile networks accelerated to provide customers of both brands with the UK’s broadest 3G data coverage
Significant investment over the next three years heralds a new era of improved network speed, reliability and coverage
Investment includes implementation of 4G-ready technology, following successful trialsLondon. 8th December 2011 – Everything Everywhere, Britain’s biggest communications company that runs Orange and T-Mobile in the UK, today confirmed plans to further integrate its two mobile networks, upgrade existing network technology, and kick-off preparations for the rollout of cutting edge 4G mobile technology with an investment of more than £1.5bn+ over the next three years.
Everything Everywhere is planning double digit growth in its 2012 network investment compared to 2011. The announcement underlines the company’s commitment to building a world class data network and industry leading coverage footprint for consumers and businesses across the UK.
Olaf Swantee, CEO of Everything Everywhere, commented: “With mobile data increasing 250% over the past two years, we are making these investments so we can deliver on our ambition to provide the UK’s most reliable, biggest and best mobile data network. We believe that the UK requires a 21st century infrastructure and are committed to rolling out 4G as soon as possible to support growing data use, connect parts of the country with little or no mobile broadband, and drive economic growth.”
Orange and T-Mobile customers will soon have the broadest 3G coverage
Throughout 2012, Everything Everywhere will continue to integrate its two networks.
Over the last year, more than 22 million customers have benefitted from the company’s network sharing, using 326 billion kilobytes of data, making 1.33 billion calls, talking over 2.8 billion minutes, and sending 5.5 billion texts while using a signal from the alternate network. Customers are already benefiting from a 20% reduction in dropped calls in localised areas.
In the first half of 2012, Everything Everywhere will further improve the cross-network signal sharing by enabling Orange and T-Mobile customers’ devices to automatically select the stronger signal from either network if their own signal is weak. The company will also begin a phased programme to streamline network sites, which will reduce its carbon footprint and go towards meeting its synergy savings target of £3.5bn NPV by 2014 as committed to in September 2010.
Building a world-class 4G-ready network for the UK
Everything Everywhere is investing in improved equipment that provides wider, faster and more reliable coverage, and which can be easily upgraded to 4G once the appropriate spectrum becomes available. Everything Everywhere is also making significant investments in its mobile backhaul – the fixed network that connects individual cell sites – and is critical to delivering even faster data speed for customers.
Everything Everywhere was the first mobile network operator in the UK to launch a live customer trial of 4G technology, in partnership with BT Wholesale. The trial, which launched in September, has demonstrated that broadband can be cost-effectively delivered to rural areas over LTE, helping the government to connect the last 10% of the population who currently have no mobile or fixed broadband access. The trial has delivered satisfaction rates of over 90%.
Fotis Karonis, Chief Technical Officer, Everything Everywhere, said: “Everything Everywhere is committed to building a world-class 4G network for Britain. We are devoting huge resources – including our 15,000 workforce and significant investments in technology – and already trialling, learning and laying the ground-work so that we are prepared to introduce 4G services as soon as it’s feasible.”

Definitely cant roam on Orange 3G yet (from T-Mobile). I was just wondering yesterday in fact when this would be possible. At home I get great T Mobile 3G coverage and at work its very poor – often switching over to Tmobile Orange (on my WP7 display anyway).
“The big switch” is probably not just roaming but making both networks act as “home” network for subscribers, so handsets will seamlessly use both at the same time (while roaming kicks in only when one network drops out). I’m very keen to see that in action, guess it’s time get a TMUK or Orange SIM card just for that.
Also helps if T-Mobile didnt cap speeds at 1mb/s or 2mb/s depending on the plan your on
