It’s been a tough old year for HTC. Their fourth quarter results were down 2.49% year-on-year. Worse still, they’re down 53% since January 2011 and total revenue looks set to drop by another 36% in the first quarter of this year.
The problems? It seems that during 2011 HTC tried a little too hard, producing a large range of handsets for every possible segment and consumer. This year the company looks set to use a new “Hero” device strategy by focusing more on quality, rather than quantity. They also face stiff competition from fellow Android users Samsung, who have seen huge sales of their Galaxy handsets.
At Mobile World Congress we expect to see just four new HTC devices, and no tablets. The HTC Ville, HTC Edge and a couple of “mid range phones” are rumoured. We’ll be on site with the news as it happens.
