I’m going to come out and say it. This is a remake of Tetris. But a damn good one at that.
The developers Blugri have taken a classic game and added a few twists, a new design and some ingenious control options and have made a really nice game.
So how is it different? The game has the expected interface with different shapes falling from the top of the screen and you have to rotate them and move them into the correct areas. But then you have special symbols as well.
Special symbols? Yes, you get a few different kinds
These then help or hinder you to complete your rows.
Controlling the blocks is a doddle, you swipe up on the screen to rotate a piece, you swipe left or right on the screen to change the column it’s falling down and lastly you swipe down to send the piece to its resting place.
Blugri have also come up with a different way to control the game. Using the accelerometer to tilt and pan you can control the orientation and speed of the falling blocks. Which takes quite a bit to get used to.
I prefer the screen swiping mode as you can easily see what’s happening onscreen at all times.
The settings for the game are pretty basic allowing you to
Graphics wise the game is pretty basic, they have used a cardboard box type of colour for the whole game. The special symbols on some of the boxes sometimes are quite hard to identify as well.
Overall Boxes is a nice remake of Tetris with some interesting features that make the game seem fresh and different. It is a free game that is ad supported, so if you want to try it out head over to the link below.
