So the much hyped Carbon for Android finally makes it onto the Google Play store, if you are not familiar with it then Carbon is basically a twitter client that has a nice interface, thats it.
I’m not going to go into a full fledged review of the app only to bring it to your attention, I have been using it since the release was announced and it is a really smooth twitter client where you can swipe between your main feed, mentions and direct messages there is some nice effects when viewing a picture in your feed and it’s generally a slick little app.
So It looks nice, but it’s a bit strapped for features and settings and notifications are locked to every 15 minutes, with a toggle each for Mentions and Messages, and those are the only two settings at the moment. I’m no expert [far from it] but can’t these apps use background sync. This mechanism is there to provide efficient and managed updates, polling isn’t the most effective way to do it.
Also carbon doesn’t stay running in the background so no notifications, why?
So in a word it really hasn’t lived up to the hype, once I got over the nice UI I was left feeling quite underwhelmed. While the design is solid the updates really need to add on the features to be on a par with other twitter apps, maybe this is intentional and will be added as a Pro feature once the developer gets the go ahead to charge for apps.
