Apple announced that Apple Pay will be coming to the UK next month, and so all the banks seem to be tripping over themselves to announce they will be supporting the service.
We have had press releases from Visa, Mastercard and Santander saying they will be supporting the service. HSBC, MBNA, Natwest/RBS/Coutts, Lloyds bank, TSB and Ulster Bank are also getting involved. In fact the only major UK bank that hasn’t signed up to the service is Barclays (probably because they are pushing PingIt).
Nathan Bostock, CEO of Santander had this to say about Apple Pay:
“Digital technology is rapidly changing how customers bank and pay on the move, and we are working to be at the forefront of that change. Apple Pay is set to change the way we pay for products and services in the UK…”
Apple Pay will be coming to the Apple iPhone 6, 6 Plus and Apple Watch for in-store purchases with the iPad Air 2 and Mini 3 also supported for in-app purchases.

London, UK — June 8, 2015 — MasterCard will offer its customers access to Apple Pay, which is transforming mobile payments with an easy, secure and private way to pay, when it launches in the UK.
MasterCard has built a foundation for secure mobile transactions made with Apple Pay, to allow consumers to use their cards where and how they want with a seamless payment experience. For consumers and merchants alike, that means that every purchase made with a MasterCard using an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or Apple Watch will offer the security, benefits and guarantees of any MasterCard transaction.
In shops, consumers can pay contactlessly simply by holding their iPhone near a contactless terminal and authenticating with Touch ID. For purchases within an app, consumers simply touch to pay and authenticate with their fingerprint or passcode for a seamless experience without having to enter their card number or leave the app.
MasterCard is working with several banks, including: HSBC; MBNA; RBS/Natwest and Santander, to enable users of an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or Apple Watch to use their MasterCard credit, debit or prepaid cards directly through Apple Pay.
Security and privacy is at the core of Apple Pay. When a customer adds a credit or debit card to Apple Pay, the actual card number is not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element on your device.
“Apple Pay, combined with MasterCard’s digital payments technology, gives consumers a simple, convenient and secure way to shop,” saidMark Barnett, President of MasterCard UK & Ireland. “MasterCard was first in the world to offer contactless and mobile payment solutions, and Britons have rapidly adopted tap and pay behaviour. In the UK, we make more than 10 contactless payments every second, and on Transport for London alone, commuters tap to pay over one million times a day. With this clear shift in payment preference so strongly embedded, we are excited that MasterCard cardholders will soon be able to make payments from some of their Apple devices, knowing that every purchase is secure and offers all the same guarantees and benefits they’ve come to expect from using their MasterCard.”
Apple Pay is easy to set up and users will continue to receive all of the rewards and benefits offered by their payment cards, and the consumer protection afforded by MasterCard remains the same. In shops Apple Pay works with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch. When paying for goods and services within apps, Apple Pay is compatible with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.

Visa europe │news release
Apple Pay Coming to Millions of UK Visa Cardholders Beginning in July
“Supported by Visa’s extensive contactless infrastructure, Apple Pay in the UK offers an easy, secure and private way to pay, catapulting mobile payments into the mainstream” – Jeremy Nicholds, Visa Europe
London, 8 June 2015: Visa Europe today announced that it will offer Visa debit, credit and reloadable prepaid cardholders access to Apple Pay, a new service that looks set to transform mobile payments with an easy, secure and private way to pay when it launches in the UK this July. Apple Pay can be used with the hundreds of thousands of contactless point of sale terminals which are already used millions of times every day throughout the UK.
Jeremy Nicholds, Executive Director of Mobile at Visa Europe, commented: “Contactless payments are already widely embraced by millions of Visa cardholders across the country every day, so adding the simplicity and convenience of Apple Pay will catapult mobile payments into the mainstream. If people leave the house with one item, it’s their mobile phone – we’ve worked alongside Apple and the various banks involved to give customers a really seamless and exciting new payment experience through Apple Pay, so they have new ways to use their favourite Visa cards on the go and when shopping in the apps they love.”
Apple Pay can be used to touch and pay wherever Visa contactless payment is accepted. There are already more than 2.6 million Visa contactless terminals across Europe with over 400,000 terminals in 250,000 outlets in the UK, including major retailers such as Tesco, Marks & Spencer, and Boots as well as the Transport for London network, and thousands of independent shops and restaurants. Leading UK Visa banks that have confirmed their participation in Apple Pay so far include Bank of Scotland, Coutts, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds, M&S Bank, MBNA, Nationwide, NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander, TSB, and Ulster Bank.
Security and privacy are at the core of Apple Pay. When you add a Visa credit or debit card to Apple Pay, the actual payment card details are not stored on the device – instead, a unique number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored on the device and used to process payments. Each transaction is authenticated using the same strong cryptographic technology that is used for Chip-and-PIN and contactless payments.
Visa cardholders making purchases using Apple Pay will be covered by all the same benefits they currently enjoy with their Visa debit and credit cards, including liability protection for unauthorised purchases and widespread international acceptance.
Apple Pay works contactlessly with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch. When paying for goods and services within apps, Apple Pay is compatible with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.
