Whilst I love the rumours associated with the mobile and tech industry, sometimes it’s really nice just to be surprised! Pebble was the original darling of both the crowdfunding and smartwatch worlds, but it’s fair to say that their second-generation devices – the three ‘Time’ variants, have hardly set the world alight. Indeed, it was widely reported a few months ago that the company was having to lay off a quarter of its staff, as sales figures dropped. In the last day or two, the company has revealed that something new is going to appear at 3pm, British Summer Time today. The clue about the ‘sleeve’ suggests they’re not moving out of the watch industry quite yet. What I find particularly great about this story is that no-one seems to have a clue what Pebble are about to release! Will it be a new series of watch? A significant software update to its current inventory, or a massive sale of its stock? Pebble has lost ground to both Apple and Android Wear devices lately, not to mention fitness devices. Its unique selling point was always the e-ink display that ensured a much longer battery life than LCD or AMOLED watches, but that no longer seems to be enough to tempt buyers. We’ll know more this afternoon, and will provide details once the announcement has been made. It will need to be something new and special if Pebble wants to recapture its position in the smartwatch market.
