Following on from, (what I always though strangely named) Gorilla Glass 4, Corning has officially announced Gorilla Glass 5. The company states that this latest generation of its strengthened glass will survive up to four times better than competing glass designs.
Corning says that in tests the new Gorilla Glass 5 was able to survive a 5.25 feet drop up to 80 percent of the time. This is when dropped face down onto a rough surface. Mine always lands on a corner, taking the screen out first hit.
Corning have published a nice shiny video, showing the new glass in all its toughened glory.
Corning states that the new Gorilla Glass is available right now commercially, and that “leading global brands” will launch devices with the new display on built in later this year.
