Design your own smartphone game on paper, then play!

I walked into the kitchen this morning to find my son drawing what appeared to be a platform game on a piece of paper. When I asked what he was doing, he told me that he was designing his own smartphone game.

“That’s nice”, I thought, but then he asked me if I wanted to play it on the phone.

This app does the magic, and all you need is a set of coloured felt-tip pens, marker pens or good coloured pencils. The floor needs to be black, the green is for anything you can jump on, blue is for objects you can move and red is for the baddies you need to squash.

There’s a little trial and error, as I quickly found out when my blue pieces seemingly broke up when they were transferred into the app, but you simply need to take a photo of your level and then place the little man at the start within the app.

Whilst it’s not the most complicated thing in the world, you can save the levels for later and perhaps even take your first step in game design too.

Plus it’ll get your kids actually drawing rather than gazing at an iPad.

Do a search for “Draw Your Game” in your app store.
