#MWC18 – Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ go official

Yes, there’s two phones. Yes, most of this leaked out, but here’s the short version. Both are powered by Android 8 and the CPU is a 64-bit octa-core CPU – a 2.7 GHz quad  and a 1.7 GHz quad or a 2.8 GHz quad and 1.7 GHz quad depending on your country and carrier. The S9 has a 5.8″ screen and the S9+ has a 6.2″. Both have curved Super AMOLED 18.5:9 displays.

The S9 has a rear “Super Speed” Dual Pixel 12 megapixel unit and an 8 megapixel front shooter. The S9 gets a trick double-rear 12 megapixel setup, with a wide-angled camera and a telephoto unit. This also has an 8 megapixel unit. However, the super-clever thing about both handsets is the fact that they can switch from F2.4 to F1.5 – basically letting more or less light in like your own eyeballs. Pretty swish, and it actually means that low-light photos are good. They actually work.

The price? Well, the S9 is £739 and the S9+ is a whopping £869. March 16th is the ship date.

We’re currently heading off to grab some hands-on time, but here’s the full details on the specifications..

In the flesh, I’d we’re brutally honest, the phone does look a lot like the previous Galaxy S8. Yes, it’s an iterative progression, but the focus here is on that clever mechanical camera lens that can let more light in or reduce it automatically. This, like our own eyes, means that it can see better in the dark and, thanks to on-board hardware, it can capture the images quicker too.

Another S9 feature is the AR Emoji. This, thanks to facial tracking, enables you to create your own custom character for email, tweeting or animating and sending to your friends on messaging apps. Samsung want you to create your own visual communications.

We’ll have full details and a demo of this shortly.

Powerful AKG stereo speakers are, and we had this tested in a very noisy demo area, actually very powerful indeed. We heard music over the gathered crowds and that’s an achievement in itself.

The phone, again through that facial tracking feature, also lets you try on make-up. This can then be purchased direct.

We’ll have more on the features and the handset itself very shortly.
