Acer at IFA 2018

Acer has kicked things off at IFA 2018 with a heavily PC based event showcasing their new laptop line up alongside some of the new gaming systems and Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality. The things that were most interesting things for us at Coolsmartphone were really the laptops in the form of the Swift 3 and Swift 5

Let’s have a little look at what they are all about.

Swift 5
This is the lightest 15″ laptop in the world currently weighing at the awesome weight of 990g. The body is made of two different Magnesium alloys one being Magnesium Lithium and the other being Magnesium Aluminium. It will feature the 8th Generation Intel™ Core™ i7-8565U and Core i5-8265U processors to deliver responsive performance and up to 10 hours of battery life for day-to-night productivity.

The screen itself is a 15.6″ FHD IPS with touch and narrow 5.87mm bezels making for a very good viewing experience and a screen to body ratio of 87.6″. The screens will also feature BluelightSheild to reduce the all evil blue light exposure.
As for storage it the laptop is capable of taking up to a 1TB NVMe PCIe SSD and will support up to !^GB of DDR4 RAM for faster boot speeds and file access times. As for ports we have got a USB 3.1 Type-C Gen-2 port delivering high-speed 10 Gbps data transfers and supporting power delivery and display output, plus two USB 3.1 Type-A ports (one with power-off charging functionality), and an HDMI port.
Nicely we have also got a LED backlit keyboard for whiling away those long winter nights.

All in this looks like a very nice bit of kit for someone needing a large on the go machine that still packs a punch and will not die on you when you are on the road.

The laptop will be available in Europe in November and will start at €1,099
Here are the specs for the system.

Swift 3

Whilst this one was not actually mentioned in the keynote it is a laptop that is worth discussing as it is in the slightly more available segment of the market and has got some really good specs on board.

The one major stand out about the Swift 3 for me is the fact that this thin and light (yet affordable) laptop will now have embedded 4g LTE on the 13″ model meaning that wherever you are you should not be left lacking a connection. Whilst it is very easy to just tether from your smartphone for me having an all in one solution is very important and the fact that this also packs in some decent specs and design is an added bonus.
It will weigh in at 1.3kg and is only 15.9mm thick. The screen is a 13.3 ” FHD panel again with super skinny bezels. It also has a lay flat design allow your push the screen back to a full 180 degrees.

At up to 512gb NVMe PCIe SSD’s and 8GB of DDR4 RAM it should be speedy as well. This is assisted by the ability to have up to an Intel Core i7 8550U as the processor, but for those who don’t need that much oomph, it will also come with the lower tier Intel Core i3 8130U.

Port’s wise it will feature USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 1 (up to 5Gbps transfers, display output and power delivery), two USB 3.0 (one with power-off USB charging) and HDMI for easily connecting mice and other gadgets.

The systems will also come with a 14″ variant and a 15.6″ variant details of which can be found below.

So that wraps things up from the Acer Keynote, there were some mentions of a new Chromebook but this was not visible at the Keynote so I will hunt that down later and bring you the details when I find one!
