Wait, who? Well, TCL were behind the re-emergence of the mighty BlackBerry. We had a look at their KEYone handset a couple of years ago and this year they showed off the new red BlackBerry Key2 and some very nice flexible screens this year.
But what else have they been up to? Well, along with some new TVs and audio products plus a raft of IoT tech, they’ve shown us a phone with a “Dotch” display.
Yes, Dotch.
It’s on this, the TCL PLEX. It has a clever display and camera optimization technology called “TCL NXTVISION” for enriched colours on the screen and much better clarity and contrast on your photos.
So, that display then. It’s a 6.53″ FHD+ TCL Dotch with a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio. They’ve whacked a load of settings in, including “Adaptive Tone” and “Eye Comfort Mode” too. Around back, there’s a triple camera setup with a 48 megapixel ultra high-res Sony lens, a separate dedicated video camera which is said to be a low-light superstar and a 16 megapixel super wide-angle lens alongside a 2 megapixel low-light sensor. Clever algorithms and a dedicated “Super Night Mode” should mean that your can also snap , the TCL PLEX produces exceptionally detailed images in near-darkness. There’s a dual single-tone LED flash and it does anti-shake, scene detection, super slow-lo and time-lapse too.
Oh and you get something called “Super Bluetooth” for connecting up to 4 devices at once. Here’s a look at it in video..
Up front is a 24 megapixel fixed-focus lens with LCD flash which sits in the screen.
Available in opal white or obsidian black, it weighs in at 192g and is around 7.99mm thick. The phone has a dual-sided glossy glass finish. They run the Android 9.0 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 octa-core chip which has 2 x 2.0GHz cores and 6 at 1.7GHz. There’s 6GB of RAM, 128GB storage on board and a microSD slot for another 256GB (up to). Powered by a healthy 3820mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0, there’s 4G / WiFi / Bluetooth 5.0 / NFC amd GPS connectivity too. Oh, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Yay!
The phone also features a “face key” system plus fingerprint sensor.
