You come here on a daily basis to hear me droning on about gadgets, so here’s exactly that – a drone!
(Sorry, in my head that joke was far funnier).
The new Skydio 2 is quite a pricey beast at $999 and will no doubt be available in the UK soon too. It’s more than just your average drone though – this 36 mph beast can fly for up to 23 minutes and, although you can control it with your phone or a controller, there’s also a beacon too. The latter will extend the communication range up to 1.5 km and you can have the drone follow you, even if it can’t see where you are.
No matter how you decide to control this, there’s clever onstacle avoidance and a Sony’s IMX577 sensor working with a Qualcomm RedDragon QCS605 for 4K 60fps video. There’s also a 12 megapixel HDR shooter for photos. This all means that you get six 4k navigation cameras using 45 megapixels of visual sensing.
It all makes the drone super-clever, and able to get around objects better than the DJI Mavic 2 (see the comparison on their site).
Basically, and to perhaps describe this better, you get this…
Head to Skydio.com right now, where you’ll probably find me with my mouse hovering over the “reserve” button …
We’ve got hold of some example footage, and I have to say, I’m already won over!
