On modern smartphones battery life can take a massive hit. Consider all your favourite apps running in the background, emails, tweets and updates plus GPS and Bluetooth connectivity.
There are portable chargers available which help boost the battery but these need to be carried around with your phone. Plus you’re going to need a cable too usually, which isn’t ideal.
A little while ago I reviewed this case from a company called UNU which had a battery built in. It was great for battery bashers such as myself.
Just recently UNU got in contact again, offering their latest design called the DX-FREE. We got one sent in to test…
The DX-Free locks the phone in a different way, here you slide the phone in to the lightning port and then click the top over into place.
This new locking technique helps keep the phone in place even if you dropped the phone, very handy extra protection.
There is a single button on the front that turns the battery on or off. This glows red when empty and green when the battery is in use.
You also have two speaker holes which redirect the audio out the front instead of down due to the speaker being covered by the case.
Looking at the back you have a glossy finish on this white review model with the UNU name located near the bottom.
Up top is the camera cut out which is a decent size, enough to allow the flash to do a good job and not cause any issues with the image.
On the right hand side you have a single button which is for the power.
This silver button sticks out slightly giving easy access to turning on and off.
Over on the right you have the volume up and down keys which, like the power button, sticks out for allowing quick access.
You also have a hole where to you can access the silent switch. However, as the case is quite thick, it can be a little tricky getting to this switch.
The top part of the case is completely clear, as you would expect, as the iPhone has no ports or buttons up top.
On the bottom you have a micro USB port for charging and syncing on iTunes. This is because the lightning port is plugged into the case.
Whilst Apple provide the lightning cable in the iPhone box, you will need to use a micro USB charger for charging the phone through the case.
Next to the charger port is the 3.5mm headset port, but due to how deep it is you will need to use the supplied adapter.
This adapter fits perfectly into the port and allows any normal 3.5mm headset to be used, so be sure not to lose it.
Conclusion
This is the second UNU case I have used now and both offer great protection as well as additional battery. The DX-Free offers a 2400mAh battery giving you an extra 100% battery life with no extra pack or cable needed.
The new way of locking the phone is really tight and gives confidence your phone is well protected. Pair this case with a glass screen protector and you have great all day battery life whilst being happy your expensive iPhone is well protected.
UNU sell a few different colours of the DX-Free and can be purchased online costing $69.99 direct here.
Big thanks to UNU who gave us one of their products to review.
