Wi-Fi Calling is almost the holy grail for people such as myself where the signal at home is shall we say less than desirable.
The news is therefore good for those with an HTC One M9 on the EE network for Wi-Fi calling is about to be rolled out to you.
According to the press release below, users with the latest update applied can make/receive calls and texts over wifi – but only if you bought your handset through an EE direct retail channel (that rules me out then!!)
Available anywhere that you have Wi-Fi access, the calls are seamlessly integrated into general usage with no special app needed, instead an HTC interface will automatically detect whether to use WiFi or cellular each time the HTC One M9 is used to make a call or send a text.
Wednesday, 5 August 2015 – HTC today announced it will be rolling out EE WiFi Calling on the HTC One M9, making calls and texts available over WiFi for customers with handsets purchased through EE direct retail channels.
WiFi Calling is now available on HTC One M9 handsets when customers download the latest system update, giving people high quality calls in more places. Customers will be able to make calls when connected by WiFi in homes and offices or even on the London Underground, hotspot permitting.
When users are in a place with limited cellular coverage but with WiFi connection, they will also be able to use WiFi Calling to make and receive calls over WiFi using their available monthly minutes.
WiFi calls are seamlessly integrated into general usage, and are therefore indistinguishable from regular calls from an HTC handset. WiFi Calling from EE and HTC uses the phone’s normal dialler and contacts book to make calls, and the normal text button to send text messages. Customers don’t need a stand-alone app, a unique HTC interface will automatically detect whether to use WiFi or cellular each time the HTC One M9 is used to make a call.
