Amazon has had mixed fortunes with its ventures into the tech world. Its Kindles have sold like hot cakes, its Fire phone has bombed, while its tablet range has fared quite well. A story in the Wall Street Journal in the US suggests that Amazon is due to release a $50 (£32) tablet in time for Christmas. Currently its cheapest device is the Amazon Fire HD 6, which costs double the price. The new cheap as chips 6″ tablet obviously won’t have any earth-shattering specs but that isn’t the point; the idea is to tie customers into the Amazon eco system, and you can just imagine how hard many people will find it to avoid such a cheap tablet. A shrewd move? Time will tell.
