Although the Windows Phone OS remains a firm favourite amongst the highly paid staff at Coolsmartphone Towers, very few of us use the device regularly. Indeed, Leigh has written a number of articles recently on the death of Windows Phone. Microsoft seems to be prepared to have one last throw of the dice in attempting to merge the very successful Surface range with the very unsuccessful mobile range. The Surface Phone has long been rumoured, but scant evidence that it actually exists has ever appeared. Microsoft has recently renewed a patent it originally took out in 2009, and last renewed in 2012. The patent itself is for a specially constructed case that includes not just a keyboard but a mouse too. This would certainly appeal to some people, possibly those mourning the demise of BlackBerry and its physical keyboards. It would also appeal to the business market, a sector that Microsoft has been keen to attract. A mock-up of how this might look is below:
Of course there might not be anything to the patent being renewed. To my mind the hardware isn’t really the problem, as nice as this handset looks, but unless Microsoft can sort out the app situation I simply don’t see any future for the OS. Would this be enough to tempt readers to Windows Phone?
