Following on the recent news of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 batteries catching fire, it appears that one of Apple’s latest flagships suffered the same fate. This time, it was the time for the iPhone 7, which exploded whilst being delivered to its new owner, according to the Reddit user who received the damaged device.
We know from the Galaxy Note issues that Lithium Ion batteries expand, burst and catch fire if they get too hot during charging, but these Li-ion batteries will also burst into flames if the battery becomes punctured. And it does look like this iPhone had become damaged whilst in transit, as the photo seems to show damage beyond what would be caused by burning.
Lithium Ion batteries used in today’s smartphones are almost always safe, but this article if nothing more, is a reminder of what can happen to our devices if we aren’t careful with them. I sincerely hope that is is a one-off and not a sign of a new run of dangerous batteries implemented without due care.
