You may have missed it, but the Xperia XZ Premium wasn’t the only Sony phone to be announced in Barcelona this year. The Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra are for selfie lovers and a “super mid-range” phones. The XA1 has a 5″ screen (720 x 1280 pixel) and an 8 megapixel selfie cam whilst the XA1 Ultra jumps up to a 6″ screen and a 16 megapixel camera.

Both phones are well crafted and the Sony build quality definitely makes them feel more premium. They also both have 23 megapixel rear camera with low-light capabilities and screens which go right to the edge of the chassis.

Inside there’s Android 7.0 (Nougat) with a 64-bit MediaTek Helio P20 octa-core CPU (Quad core 2.3GHz + Quad core 1.6GHz) running the show. This sits on 3GB RAM and there’s 32GB of internal storage plus a microSD card slot for more. The XA1 Ultra has 4GB RAM and either 32GB or 64GB storage depending on the configuration. It also that bigger 6″ screen which goes up to 1080p HD.

Measuring in at 145 x 67 x 8 mm, the XA1 weighs 143g whereas the XA1 Ultra weighs 188g and is a tiny bit thicker at 8.1mm. Other differences between the two include the battery – 2300mAh on the XA1 and 2700mAh on the XA1 Ultra. Both have Qnovo Adaptive Charging, STAMINA Mode and MediaTek Quick Charging.

Other specs include 4G, GPS, Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi, Sony xLOUD and Clear Audio+. The Xperia XA1 and Xperia XA1 Ultra will roll out from the Spring with Android Nougat at launch. Both will be available in white, black, gold and pink. EE and Vodafone have both confirmed to us that they’ll be offering the XA1 version.

Here’s a couple of galleries. The Sony staff in Barcelona were showing off the rather cool covers which also doubled as stands. They worked well on the 6″ Ultra.
