Recently, I was sent the Moshi IonBank 5K Portable battery unit for testing, which retails at £100.00 (yes, this is not a typo) for the 5150 mAh unit. There is the cheaper 3K unit at £69.95 and 10k which costs £89.95. The 5K unit looks like a metal business card holder, with its aluminium body which does like pretty stylish. Around the sides, we have 4 lights to tell how much charge the unit has left, a USB socket to add your adapter of choice but under the small leather flap down the side of the unit reveals a built-in iOS lightning cable and USB cable for charging the unit up.
The built-in cables came in very handy during my time using the IonBank, sadly I still needed a USB-C cable constantly hanging from it for my OnePlus 6 which defeated the object of the design in my opinion. The first challenge came from a Huawei P20 Pro, which had 13% battery left before we plugged it into the IonBank. The result was the phone only reached 73% before the unit was drained completely of its power. We tried again using my OnePlus 6, we got similar results, however, the Apple iPhone 7 we had no problems at all and still had enough charge for another complete charge.
Unfortunately for the price and the outcome of the test, it wasn’t a great experience for a non-iOS user.
