I’m a free man right now. I’m using a really old phone (because this happened to my lovely Huawei) and, after typing the words “I’d like to leave, please can you issue my PAC code” no less than 6 times into an online chat with Vodafone, I’m ready to move onto to a new network with a new phone.
But there’s something inside of me. It seems to pop up every time someone offers me a “deal” costing nearly £50 per month. That’s just too much. It’s too much money. A two year deal, at £50 every month? That’s £1,200 quid.
I need a new bathroom guys. £1,200 can go on that instead. Sorry, but I’ve got to be realistic. So, if I can pay £13 every month for 10GB on a SIM-only deal then I’ll do that instead. It only takes a few minutes to get your PAC code and it’s even easier now that you can do it via an online chat with most networks. I got offered a deal whilst asking for my PAC which was 30% cheaper than the normal price, so don’t be scared to haggle.
Anyways, where was I? Ah yes. Remember the LG G5 we first got to play with in 2016? It’s still good, it takes good pictures and it has a great screen and I did have one before I gave it to my nephew.
A reconditioned one, in Grade A condition, is now just £129.97 from Laptops Direct and that, in all honesty, is a very decent phone for your money. You can have the gold one too.
This has a 5.3″ 1440 x 2560 16:9 screen (aka, bloody good), an always-on display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (2×2.15 GHz Kryo & 2×1.6 GHz Kryo), 32GB on-board,a microSD, 4GB RAM, dual 16 megapixel rear shooter, 8 megapixel selfie cam, DLNA, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, NFC, a type-C charging point and, yes, a 3.5mm audio port.
So, that’s £13 per month for a SIM-only 4G deal with 10GB of data and £129.97 for a properly decent phone. Total comparable cost? It works out at £312 for the airtime over two years, so with the cost of the phone you’re shelling out £441.97 instead of £1,200 for something released more recently with a slightly faster processor or a bit more memory. I don’t know about you, but a difference of more than £758 will sort out my tiles, the bath, a new shower….
