MWC – Up close. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3

So, 5G, right? For £499? Well, that’ll tick a few boxes with a lot of people methinks.

The Mi Mix 3 is showing right now on the Mi.com site and she slides baby. She slides. That 6.39″ Full HD+ Samsung AMOLED has a 19.5:9 aspect at 2340 x 1080 (403 PPI) with a 60000:1 contrast ratio and consumes nearly the entire frontage of the handset. Some 93.4% and it’s pushed the camera off the screen completely.

No notch. No hole. You slip the magnetic rear-end up and the magnetic slider reveals the camera arrangement.

Xiaomi here call it a “new type of screen interaction” and a “new way to capture”. At the back of the slider is a couple of 12 megapixel shooters which have super low-light performance and AI for scene detection and a whole host of cleverness we’ve recently seen in our Xiaomi reviews. Up front is a 24 megapixel and a 2 megapixel arrangement for “real time video background blurring”. You also get the whole AI beauty modes.

This is pretty much the only phone we’ve seen in the last few hours that isn’t powered by the Snapdragon 855. Instead it’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 running up to 2.8GHz, but hey – 2.8GHz is still ruddy quick. It has 128GB on-board storage and 6GB memory plus an Adreno 630 GPU running up to 710MHz.

There’s a 3200mAh battery with wireless charging and you can get it in blue or black.

Other bits include a USB-C two-way charging port, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, WiFi, 4G and 5G. There’s also a fingerprint sensor.
