Come on, we told you it was a good phone. The Galaxy SII has already swept the board at the Mobile Choice awards and it’s now won Phone Of The Year in the T3 Gadget Awards too.

Apple beaten by Samsung phone it wants to ban

EMBARGOED UNTIL 10.45PM, 10/10/11 – The courtroom battle of the tech giants rages on, but Samsung scored an important victory over Apple tonight when its Galaxy S II was named Phone of the Year at the T3 Gadget Awards, the world’s biggest technology awards.

The top-of-the-range Android phone triumphed ahead of the iPhone thanks to its gorgeous looks, intuitive operation and unrivalled tech spec – including Super AMOLED screen and powerful 8 megapixel camera. It’s the first time in three years that Apple or HTC haven’t won in this category.

The winning Galaxy S II is the phone Apple wants to ban, with its feud with Samsung continuing to esculate.

There are currently 23 ongoing patent infringement cases between the two companies, and recent reports suggest Samsung could even seek a retaliatory ban on Apple’s new iPhone 4S.

“The Samsung Galaxy S II is a gorgeous looking phone with slick operation, a great social hub and the best camera on any smartphone to date,” says Luke Peters, Editor of T3. “It has great integration with Samsung’s TVs and a screen that matches the iPhone 4.”

The T3 Gadget Awards is the world’s biggest technology awards and 2011, its fifth year, was the best yet – with a record-breaking 960,000-plus votes cast.

Despite losing out in the Phone of the Year category, Apple isn’t going home empty-handed – its iPad 2 winning the Tablet of the Year and the Macbook Air picking up Computer of the Year and the T3 Design Award.

Other big winners included Microsoft’s Kinect, which clinched both Gaming Gadget of the Year and overall Gadget of the Year. Its motion-sensor technology has revolutionised video gaming, and been confirmed by Guinness World Records as the fastest-selling consumer electronic device of all time.

It was a good year for video gaming tech, which also triumphed in the Innovation of the Year category. Razer’s Switchblade is an incredible concept gadget with an infinitely customisable keyboard that metamorphoses to suit the game being played. This cutting-edge tech can currently be seen in its just-released big brother the Razer Blade.

Apple were pipped by Google to Tech Brand of the Year. Amazon and its Kindle picked up two awards, Retailer of the Year and Commuter Gadget of the Year.

And after a year when social media demonstrated how central technology is becoming to our everyday lives, Twitter and Facebook both picked up gongs.

Twitter won Digital Media Service of the Year, after being involved in everything from the super-injunction scandal to the Arab spring uprising; and Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg was voted Tech Personality of the Year, beating off competition from the likes of Lady Gaga and Stephen Fry.

David Attenborough picked up the Outstanding Contribution to Technology Award, in recognition of a career championing the cutting-edge of tech through his world-famous nature programmes.

“I’ve been at this game rather a long time,” says Sir David, “so this award from T3 is a culmination. It means a lot to me.”
