London, 14 August 2012 – Waze, the free social traffic and navigation app, today added a cheap fuel locator feature to the app. Drivers can now navigate to the cheapest petrol station along their route and update real-time fuel prices at local petrol stations. Users searching for fuel can view nearby petrol stations colour-coded by cost.
Users in the UK have already contributed more than 4,000 fuel price updates at petrol stations across the country.
The new crowd-sourced feature will save drivers in the UK time and money getting fuel.
Waze currently boasts more than 23 million users worldwide, with more than 2 million users added in the last month. In the UK, the Waze community is 600,000 strong.
The UK is the second country to get the crowd-sourced fuel locator in Waze, following a successful launch in the United States in June.
The availability of the new petrol station feature in the UK is made possible due to crowdsourcing, as Waze’s dedicated community of map editors in the UK provided a detailed list of more than 7,000 of the 8,700 country’s petrol stations. Users worldwide can manually add petrol stations to Waze’s maps at www.waze.com/editor.
Darren-J McConachie, a Waze map editor from Edinburgh, was instrumental in securing the feature’s release.
“Fuel prices in the UK are amongst the highest in the world and show no signs of abating in the near future,” McConachie said. “UK Wazers can now make informed and proactive choices as to where they fill up.”
“We’re thrilled to be launching our cheap fuel price locator in the United Kingdom,” said Yael Elish, Waze VP of Product and Marketing, “This is just another indication of how crowdsourcing can make people’s daily driving experience safe, more efficient, and now, a bit cheaper.”
The petrol station feature is entirely dependent on crowd-sourced information. The more petrol stations added by Waze’s map editing community, the faster the feature will be made available in each country.
Waze can be downloaded for free in the Apple App Store, Google:Play Market, or at http://m.waze.com
