The Nokia Lumia 1020 is nearly upon us

It is very nearly time for the Nokia Lumia 1020 to rear its head and end all of the rumours. On Thursday in New York Nokia will unveil their next Windows Phone flagship and in true 2013 style pretty much all of the details have already leaked out.

So what will it look like?

Thanks to various anonymous Twitter leakers such as @vizileaks and @evleaks we’ve seen images such as these recently.


Then last night WPCentral got their hands on another image of the upcoming Nokia Lumia 1020 along with some specs.

So what is the spec going to be like?

The current version of Windows Phone is the one thing restricting manufacturers like Nokia from specifying 1080p screens and quad core processors, so don’t go expecting that, more like

– 32GB internal storage
– 2GB RAM
– NFC
– Optional Wireless charging
– OIS image stabilisation
– 41MP camera

Anything else we should know?

Yes there are a few things, firstly that Nokia are going to have some clip on shells for the 1020. Details of a camera grip case have appeared over at The Verge, this apparently makes the 1020 easier to hold and it also adds a 1020mAh battery at the same time.

This case does appear to have the pins for wireless charging so it seems that another different clip on wireless charging case will be made available. Nokia really seem to capitalising on the aftermarket accessories.

So what will the pictures be like?

In a strange twist yesterday The Verge Joe Belfiore (the Windows Phone Manager) posted some pictures to his Flickr account, an eagle eyed follower of his quickly downloaded the pictures and inspected the exif data and lo and behold some of the pictures were taken with a Nokia Lumia 1020, which is either really stupid of him or it was intentional as part of a early leak of information, either way it sort of confirms what the phone will be called. The sample picture took with the 1020 is below.

There isn’t really a lot I can say about that, it isn’t really an astounding picture. But no doubt the Lumia 1020 is going to be an astounding camera, what with OIS and the 41MP camera and a Xenon AND LED flash. WPCentral along with specs I posted earlier, posted some information about the camera

• It has optical image stabilization (OIS) built in
• It takes the image in a 32MP and 5MP at the same time in 16:9
• The 5MP image is over sampled dropping 7pixels into one “super pixel”
• It shoots 38MP in 4:3
• “Nokia 909” was an early name for it but it will be “Lumia 1020” for release

So will I be buying one?

Well that is a difficult one, as I said earlier the Lumia 1020 WILL be a great camera, it has taken many of the great things from the Nokia Pureview 808 and improved upon them, such as Optical Image Stabilisation which means taking steady shots will be a lot easier. But a few things do worry me slightly. Firstly the Lumia 1020 isn’t going to be a 1080p device so at the end of the year when the next Windows Phone update comes along with 1080p support we are all going to want an upgraded version. Secondly the Lumia doesn’t have a MicroSD slot meaning that what with all of your apps, games and music you are going to have thousands of pictures on it as well, there is always a compromise somewhere but surely Nokia could have added a little card slot somewhere and shut people like me up. Thirdly dare I say it is the Windows Phone ecosystem, it WILL let it down, yes the app situation is still improving, it’s just not improving quick enough for me. As regards whether I will buy one, lets just say “probably”.
