Channel 4 have just updated the iOS and Android app (at the same time) to version 3.0. The new version allows downloading so users can grab programmes from the last 30 days to watch any time within the next 7 days rather than only being able to watch whilst with a data connection.
Also included are Collections – editorial compilations linked together by either theme or subject matter. To access the new features you will need to create a free 4oD account and provide them with your address so they can let you know about relevant events in your area.
This is great if you want to grab programmes on a nice cheap WiFi connection for later viewing when you’re out and about.
What’s New in Version 3.0
Version 3.0 is a mandatory update of the 4oD app. It brings new functionality allowing you to download 30-day catch up content to your device then watch offline or abroad. We have also introduced Collections – editorial compilations linking 4oD programmes by theme or subject matter. Download is over WiFi only, in the UK and Republic of Ireland. After downloading, you have up to seven days to watch a show. Downloading is free. All you need to do is register with us, sign in to the 4oD app on your mobile or tablet and, if you haven’t already done so, give us your address. 4oD is a free app, and our content is free to watch because we are a commercially-funded public service broadcaster. As a publicly-owned, not-for-profit organisation, the revenue we make from advertising doesn’t go to shareholders, it goes back into making more programmes.
Understanding our viewers with respect to their gender, age and where they live gives us data on the demographic of people who watch certain programmes. This helps inform programme decisions and helps attract advertisers – meaning we can make more of the shows you love. Occasionally, we may also use your address to tell you about relevant Channel 4 events in your area that you might be interested in.
What do you think of the new features, will you be downloading the app now; let us know in the comments below.
