The screen measures 2560×1440 pixels and is a 5.5″ panel. This gives a monster 538ppi.

According to LG, the display will enable users to enjoy a full view of PC-version web pages at a single glance without image distortion; a contrast to current Full HD displays which only realize 3/4th of a full screen. Also, even when enlarging the screen, users will be able to enjoy undistorted and sharper text.
There is no word on when this technology will filter into the new generation of handsets or of cost however bearing in mind it is only 1.21mm thin and with a bezel of only 1.2mm it could lead to some even more beautiful looking devices – even with the peppers!

At 2560X1440 with 538ppi, the new 5.5-inch Quad HD panel is the highest resolution and ppi (pixel per inch) mobile panel to date, and provides a glimpse at what’s next after current Full HD smartphone panels, critical given the growing trend towards larger displays.

LG Display’s Quad HD panel for smartphones realizes clearer images with 4 times more pixels than HD at 1,280X720, thereby reproducing more delicate colors as well as improving contrast and vividness when compared to current mobile displays. This advancement will enable consumers to fully enjoy more life-like and crisp images, and even Blu-ray equivalent video, on their smartphones. The panel also features the highest ppi among current mobile device displays.
In addition, the new Quad HD panel will enable users to enjoy a full view of PC-version web pages at a single glance without image distortion; a contrast to current Full HD displays which only realize 3/4th of a full screen. Only 1.21mm thin with a 1.2mm bezel measured in LCD modules (LCM), LG Display’s new Quad HD panel is both the world’s slimmest and narrowest panel, with 12% reduced thickness compared to the company’s 5.2-inch Full HD panel released last month. Based on Low Temperature Poly-Silicon (LTPS) substrate, the panel also realizes superior brightness of 430nit with improved transmittance and larger aperture opening size.
LTPS-based smartphone displays are expected to record 765 million units in shipments next year according to research firm DisplaySearch, as displays with larger screens, higher resolution, and less power consumption prove key to competitiveness in the premium model segment.
Will they be supplying a magnifying glass so you can read the text?
Seriously what the hell is the point in a screen with that kind of resolution in a phone? Don’t get me wrong, I love tech, I love the advancements being made, but this size screen with that resolution is just pointless. It is like a willy waving competition. That resolution belongs in a 10″ device, maybe 8″ at a push.
How about a nice 4″ phone with a 1280 * 720 screen?

That’s actually a fantastic point. Finally we’re seeing the sort of pixel densities which would allow this to happen. I say ‘finally’ like I’ve been waiting for it all my life (I have, sort of), but it’s very encouraging indeed.
As for how much use it’d be in a handset, well, that’s another thing. It’s a bit like the 4G thing. Most people I know don’t have good enough eyesight to really notice the difference between an iPhone 3GS and an iPhone 4, let alone going from 1080p to this monster resolution.
I was annoyed at laptop screens for absolutely ages for their paltry 1024×768 resolutions back in the day. We’ve finally got to a position where resolution makes little difference, and text can still be readable at very small sizes on most screens.
But.. if it doesn’t cost any more when it appears, doesn’t reduce battery life, and looks better, then I’m all for it.
I do have the Oculus Rift dev unit, its great but the biggest problem it has is still dpi. The display is magnified to help fill your FOV and more importantly bring it back into focus being so close that you still get a poor resolution with the addition of seeing a grid around each pixel.
I’m also looking forward to seeing what they do for a consumer unit with a higher res screen, but certainly we need continued development on screen tech like this to get the dpi as high as possible for tech such as HUD’s, VR and no doubt things I can’t think of at the moment.
I agree for handsets there becomes a limit, I have the HTC one now and I feel at 1080p its perfect, and unsure what advantage any higher res would bring. But since the development of tech isn’t used just in phones…bring it on 😀
